Wayfair: Homebase Design System Documentation Site

The Problem: The site we inherited was designed by and for engineers, but needed to work for designers. Additionally, we needed a flexible structure that could grow alongside the system as we refined it.

My Role: I owned the website and lead everything from reworking the IA and component taxonomy to having final approvals on all component documentation.

I led workshops with designers and developers to understand how our components worked together, refine our component taxonomy, and create a new information architecture for the site.

I created documentation templates for designers and developers to complete as they designed and built each new component. The templates made it easy for all team members to collaborate and give feedback, but mapped directly to fields in our CMS for easy publishing.

The Results: The Homebase Design System documentation website was often held up as an example of exceptional documentation. I believe this success was a result of creating a documentation processed empowering designers and developers to write clear, concise usage guidelines in a highly collaborative environment.

High praise from a Product Director during an all-hands meeting.
